Scope

In 1996, Amsterdam City Council proceeded with the development of IJburg, a new residential being created on a cluster of manmade islands east of the city. IJburg is set for completion in 2012, by which time it will provide 18,000 dwellings for 45,000 residents.

Materials

Situated within one of the residential blocks, The Blue House has been taken off the market for four years on the initiative of artist Jeanne van Heeswijk. During this time it will act as a centre for cultural production, researching into and documenting the genesis and evolution of IJburg’s community.

Budget

As well as free accommodation, the Blue House offers each visiting artist a EUR 6,000 fee for the six month residency, plus travel expenses.

Funding sources

As The Blue House has no single, regular source of public funding, artist residency costs and project overheads are financed from a variety of sources.

The Blue House’s Hospitality programme strand has been developed as Stage Four of ALMOSTREAL, a European Cultural Foundation project supporting and researching artistic collaboration within different cultural contexts in Europe.

Summary Artists’ Brief

Artists, architects and creative thinkers of various nationalities are invited to live and work in the house on six month residencies, undertaking live research and producing artworks and projects which examine the evolving urban space and contribute to the building of community history and identity.
