Commission to join the artist project team - Electric Wharf Coventry

This paper confirms the appointment of artist Esther Rolinson to join the Electric Wharf artist project team. The artist will work with this team to fulfil the brief outlined below. The full project team is listed with contact details at the end of this paper.

Each artist appointed to this team has been selected for a different reason. The reason for the appointment is referred to as a passport into the project.

The passport

To consider:

  • Light and lighting technologies to their fullest potential -
    • Animation
    • Reflection
    • Deflection
    • Refraction

And in parallel to consider:

  • The built environment, existing and new in the context of light and sculpture.
    • The mesh and light
    • Light and the transformer area,
    • Light and the mast
    • Light and the entrance area.

Roles and responsibilities

1. General design team role:

  1. Engage with the vision for Electric Wharf and become familiar with the framework that has been developed by David Patten and Larry Priest (artist advisor and architect) for Electric Wharf .
  2. Attend regular design team meetings and discussions - many of these may take place via email but a regular programme of meetings is to be established.
  3. Debate with the design team the areas of priority for the overall development, debate ideas developed by you and others as they are presented.
  4. Agree with the design team at the earliest possible opportunity areas of priority for your work.
  5. Consider the opportunities within the development for light to animate buildings and spaces as noted in the passport statement.

 

2. Specialist areas of activity

  1. Develop the mesh screening as a sculpture feature with the project architect. This is an urgent area of work and should be developed with Larry Priest as soon as possible.
  2. Agree with the design team and the commissions manager the other areas that will be developed as detailed commission proposals.
  3. Set up an agreed work timetable for the delivery of concept proposals.
  4. Develop with the architectural team and specialist technical advisors the detailed technical specifications for the commissioned works.
  5. Work with the commission's manager to present project proposals to other interested parties outside the design team as necessary.
  6. Work with the project architect and the main contractor to specify materials and fabrication requirements.
  7. Be available for meeting / discussions about the work during fabrication and installation.
