'Routes, Rail, River: A Connectivity and Legibility Study' for Taunton seeks public artist

Deadline: December 1, 2009, 5:00 pm

Taunton Deane Borough Council are commissioning 'Routes, Rail, River: A Connectivity and Legibility Study' for Taunton in order to enhance the attractiveness, user friendliness and functionality of the public realm along the River Tone and the routes from the train station to the town centre.

Diana Hatton, a consultant with Public Art South West, has been appointed as the lead advisor to liaise with partners and we now wish to appoint a public artist to explore creative approaches to the River Tone and associated routes through community consultation.

The artist appointed will work closely with the lead advisor to put forward recommendations for public art and other enhancements of these routes to partners at a conference in February.

The fee for the lead public artist is £5,000 with a small project budget for materials and the consultation.

With Somerset Art Work's contribution, we are also able to offer a small fee of £1000 to an emerging artist to take up a work placement alongside the lead artist.   Their role as indicated in the brief is to shadow and support the lead artist in order to gain experience in delivering a public art project and to pick up communication and consultation skills.  The lead artist will manage the work placement's work, and while the advisor is managing the study as a whole and the lead artist, she will also be able to offer mentoring support to the work placement.

The background and details of the study are outlined in the brief attached.  If you interested in applying for either one of the roles please respond by Tuesday 1 December with an 'Expression of Interest' which will need to include:

a) An indication of which role you are applying for
b) A statement reflecting your past experience, skills and approach to the brief
c) Websites and / or portfolio or examples of past work
d) Two references

We will be meeting on Wednesday 2 December to shortlist, and may well contact you on Wednesday to ask you to make a short presentation on Friday 4 December. Please do contact me if you would like further details and a chat about the study.
