Artist residency - Bridgend Town centre, Elbow Room

Deadline: November 21, 2011

Elbow Room, on behalf of Bridgend County Borough Council, wish to appoint an artist in residence for Bridgend Town Centre to develop a visual art project that takes a fresh, creative approach to enabling in-depth community engagement and consultation. This is an exciting opportunity for an artist who is interested in participatory practice and considers engagement, consultation and participation an integral part of their practice.

This project is part of a larger regeneration programme for the town centre and it is hoped that the artist in residence will also be able to make links with artists commissioned to make physical artworks within the current programme.

It is also hoped that the information gathered through the residency process will be recorded or documented in some way and made accessible or disseminated, as appropriate, so as to widen the reach of the project. Examples of how this might happen include online or printed publications, podcasts, archives and events but the artist will have the chance to allow creative solutions to this aspect to emerge as the project progresses.

The appointed artist will work across all the sites included in the current public art programme (and perhaps the areas between) to engage the community of residents, workers and visitors in Bridgend Town Centre, in addition to local heritage groups.

The artist will be provided with a suitable working base. The location will depend, in some part, on the working methodology of the artist as well as the availability of appropriate sites.

The residency will run from January to September 2012. There are 75 contracted days and the project will be run on a part-time basis – approximately 2 days per week for 36 weeks. There will be a flexible project structure to enable both the artist and partners/participants to fulfil other commitments.

The total budget is £15,000 excluding VAT. This comprises of a £10,800 artist fee and £4200 for all materials, costs and expenses in relation to the project.
