Sustrans Passing Places Artists Commission for Bentham, North Yorkshire - Pioneer Projects (Celebratory Arts) Ltd

Deadline: January 16, 2013

Sustrans ‘Passing Places’
A Public Art opportunity for Bentham, North Yorkshire

High Bentham, North Yorkshire, has been chosen for an exciting public art project as part of the Way of the Roses cycle trail. This 170 mile coast to coast route from Morecambe to Bridlington has been developed by Sustrans and it passes within a mile of Bentham, North Yorkshire. Sustrans now plans to enhance the route with public art at the start and finish and at 10 passing places en route. The art work will be designed to show the visitor something about the uniqueness of the community through which they are passing. The aim is to make the Way of the Roses the most culturally rich, as well as the most scenically rich, of the long distance trails.

Pioneer Projects (Celebratory Arts) Ltd is the local organisation leading the Bentham Passing Places Project. Pioneer Projects is the organisation which initiated and led on the development and implementation of CARnival, in association with 509 Arts’ Cultural Olympiad Performance of My Last Car, which attracted 2,000 audience members and over 200 participants in June 2012.

A Steering Group has been convened to oversee the project in Bentham.  They are inviting submissions from artists wishing to be considered for the commission to design and create the artwork for Bentham.   A large part of the project will be about engaging with the local community through various events to get ideas and feedback and ensure that the final piece is relevant and meets local aspirations.
