Teesdale Viewmarkers

Deadline: March 2, 2015, 5:00 pm

ARTworks in Teesdale has annouced a call for applications from Artists/Creative Practitioners: individuals or groups/organisations, to design and create 12 viewmarkers to celebrate 12 iconic viewpoints around the Heart of Teesdale area.

Teesdale, described as England’s last wilderness, lies in south–west County Durham. It is the landscape through which the River Tees starts its journey high in the Pennines and flows through the dale, finally joining the North Sea at Middlesbrough.

The Heart of Teesdale is an area defined by The Heart of Teesdale Landscape Partnership, a Heritage Lottery funded body. ARTworks in Teesdale are delivering the Teesdale Viewmarkers Project with funding from The Heart of Teesdale and Arts Council England.

The “viewmarkers” could be seat/sign and/or shelter; they could include interpretation of the view or landscape in which they are placed. The creative practitioner should consider how their viewmarker will enhance the view without intruding upon it. The creative practitioner should
consider how they are to be installed, maintained, their resistance to wind and weather, and any health or safety issues. The views are iconic views, some have inspired artists such as Turner, Cotman, or Scott. OS map grid references and images will be provided as soon as the locations have been finalised.

Selection process

  1. Interested creatives will complete and return an application form, giving details of past work/public commissions and why you would be able to fulfil this commission. Please attach a brief CV. Application Deadline Monday 2nd March 5pm
  2. Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend for interview in Barnard Castle on Friday March 27th 2015
  3. Up to 3 applicants will be invited to work up designs for public consultation and display. There will be an honorarium (up to £1,000 each incl.VAT) provided for this.

Following public consultation the selected creative/s will be required to work up a detailed design plan prior to fabrication. There is a budget of £26,000 (incl.VAT) to include all costs for design, materials, fabrication and installation of the 12 viewmarkers.

The project’s aims are:

  • to create 12 distinctive and high quality finished pieces which enhance the views at which they are placed
  • to inspire and inform the public visiting those viewpoints
  • to encourage engagement with landscape through art

To apply please read relevant information on the website, or facebook page and complete and return the application form to download form from website click here.
