Wide Open Space - Artist in residence: Bridport to Chickerell Coast Road

Deadline: April 2, 2009

Wide Open Space will be a series of innovative commissions for art in the rural public realm by Dorset Design and Heritage Forum (DDHF). In the first of these we want to see whether the “non-places” of our national road network can be changed so that we relate to the rural localities we normally pass by in our cars.  We think that roads can become (once again?) new social spaces uniting the pedestrian, cyclist and motorist through new concepts like psychological road calming.

Dorset County Council Environmental Services (DCCES) wishes to appoint an artist/designer/maker to work as “artist in residence” during the design and development stages of a road refurbishment scheme, the Bridport to Chickerell Coast Road (B3157), Dorset. The artist will be asked to identify opportunities for the creative involvement of communities in the planning and design process, research the potential for the use of sustainable materials/ways of working in the designs, set out a thematic/conceptual framework or guidelines for commissioning and work on designs/identify opportunities for the involvement of artists or makers. The project is supported by Public Art South West and Arts Council England.

The fee for the work, which will take place between April and September 2009 is UKP4,000, plus UKP1,000 travel and expenses.
