ground-UP SW Burnley call for submissions

Deadline: March 18, 2013, 5:00 pm

  • Two residencies at £7,100 (all inc.)
  • One 'Document' commission at £7000 (all inc.)

(please note these briefs are the definitive versions and supersede any published prior to 20/02/2013)

Two residencies at £7100 each:

ground-UP is a programme of artist residencies focusing on exploring and celebrating the uniqueness, the individuality, the commonality, the sense of place in South West Burnley. They are interested in the arts as a process that stimulates dialogue and meaning-making and so are less concerned with the creation of objects or products. Taking place over a period of twelve months, ground-UP invites the community to be directly involved with the commissioning of several residencies/commissions. This process is facilitated by three Creative Collaborators: two artists Cath Ford and Iain Broadley; and ethnographer Dr Steph Hawke.

ground-UP would like to invite submissions for two residencies to help them engage local people in conversation about their lives in South West Burnley. There are no prescribed themes or any expected outcomes. Submissions are welcomed from artists working in all art forms and from artists at all stages of their career. The residencies are artist led, it is about the artist's work engaging with the people and the place of South West Burnley and developing through connection with that environment. ground-UP are looking for artists to submit proposals that demonstrate their unique practice. They want artists to inspire, thrill, excite and have the courage to challenge preconceptions whilst respecting the people and the place. ground-UP also anticipate the successful artist(s) will use this experience to develop their own artistic practice. Self-motivated and the ability to work independently are essential characteristics for the successful artist(s). Whilst the Creative Collaborators can provide information about the area, topics that have already come up in discussion with residents, potential areas for exploration and some very useful contacts, they are only contracted for one day a week and are busy exploring their own practice during this time.

One 'Document' commission at £7000 (all inc.):

ground-UP would like to invite submissions for a 'Document': Publication, Video, or combination of media. They are open to all ideas that record and celebrate the initial twelve months of the project.

There are no prescribed themes or any expected outcomes. Submissions are welcomed from artist(s)/designer(s) working in all types of media and at any stage of their career. Whilst ground-UP require there to be a recognisable 'Document' available for distribution and sharing, they are not necessarily looking for a book. However, this does not mean that they would reject a proposal for a book.

ground-UP want the artist(s)/designer(s) to inspire, thrill, excite and have the courage to challenge preconceptions whilst respecting the people and the place. ground-UP are looking for artist(s)/designer(s) to submit proposals that demonstrate their unique practice and also anticipate the successful artist(s)/designer(s) will also use this experience to develop their own practice.

Paramount to the commission is the artist(s)/designer(s) ability to recognize and creatively portray what is special and distinctive about the project.

ground-UP are looking for artist(s)/designer(s) who are very resourceful and will make the most of material already documented by the Creative Collaborators and the Residents as part of the South West Streets Museum project. ground-UP recognise the budget of £7000 is quite modest for this type of commission. However, there has been a plethora of material already sourced that will be made freely available to the successful artist(s)/designer(s).
