Singing for Health community choirs to perform for Folkestone Triennial 2014

On Thursday 29th May 2014 at 6.30pm over 200 singers from the Folkestone area will come together as The Futures Choir to stage a one-off performance at the Leas Cliff Hall. The event will be filmed for exhibition at Folkestone Triennial 2014, from the 30th August to the 2nd November 2014.
Singers will perform Lookout, a choral work composed by internationally renowned saxophonist and composer John Harle, with lyrics by the celebrated poet Tom Pickard. This world premiere will be captured on film for Folkestone Triennial by leading documentary filmmaker Luke Menges.
The idea for this expression of community through song was originally conceived by two Finnish artists, Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen, and called Valituskuoro choirs, translated in English as 'Chorus of Complaints'. Their initiative has been taken up in many cities around the world, with the effect of converting the energy people use for complaining into something positive, powerful and aesthetically satisfying.
This commission for Folkestone Triennial 2014 brings talents in music, poetry and film into creative contact with a large number of people from communities in Folkestone and East Kent. It is project managed by The Sidney De Haan Research Centre for Arts and Health at Canterbury Christ Church University which studies, among other things, the positive impact that community singing can have on the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities.
Folkestone Triennial takes place every three years and is one of the five key projects of the Creative Foundation, an independent visionary arts charity dedicated to enabling the regeneration of Folkestone through creative activity.
