Public Art Conference - West Lothian

October 12, 2016

Community arts of West Lothian Council will hold their inaugural Public Art conference on Wednesday the 12th of October, 2016 at Howden Park Centre - Howden in Livingston. The event will take an in-depth look at the many facets of public art engagement practices.  From the large spectacle to hands-on sessional activities, artists work in a range of different contexts to stimulate and encourage creativity.

The inception and development of many of these projects are years in the making and this conference highlights some of the complexities of working with communities over the longer term.  During the conference delegates will have a chance to speak to planners, artists, local authority arts officers and private commissioners to gain some insight into how public art as a sector functions in different parts of Scotland today.

The day will include presentations by Lesley O'Hare - Culture and Libraries Manager, Falkirk Community Trust and Andy Scott - Artist, who will discuss 'The Kelpies' project. Other contributions from Jupiter Artland will detail working with temporary art commissions and the educational outreach programme.  Also, David Pierce - Director of Dallas Pierce Quintero will talk about the 12 year public art strategy for the Winchburgh development and the community engagement that lead to the creation of the strategy.  There will also be an opportunity to join in a guided public art walk of Livingston.

The conference would be useful to art professionals in the industry, artists looking to gain more information about public art open competition processes, new graduates in art, urban planning or landscape architecture as well as the general public.
