Public Art South West Activities

Public Art South West is a service of South West Arts. It aims to develop a wide range of opportunities for artists and craftspeople to contribute in diverse and innovative ways to our built and natural environment. Public Art South West takes a leading role in co-ordinating a range of strategies for public art development in the region. In achieving its aims, Public Art South West works in partnership with a broad range of organisations and individuals in the public and private sectors, including local authorities, health trusts, environmental groups, and the educational sector; and with architects, designers, planners, developers, artists, arts administrators and many others.

Recent projects and initiatives include:

Resources: www.publicartonline.org.uk. Visitors to the site continue to grow steadily and we have a programme of new Case Studies and Thumbnail Studies which will be added to the site over the next six months. The site has a free listings service and is updated on a monthly basis. We have recently made additions to our Advice Sheets and are in the process of refining the Debates and Notices section, so do keep looking in, there is always something new to see!

Local Authorities:

We continue to work closely with a range of local authorities throughout the region and are in discussion with Cornwall County Council and Plymouth City Council about specialised public art posts. We have provided presentations, training and continuing professional development seminars to a range of authorities and organisations during the past six months and are always happy to advise both artists and organisations on all aspects of public art activity.

New Initiatives:

The RSA Art for Architecture Scheme has invited us to work on a 'How To' publication in relation to involving artists on design teams. This is something we have been wanting to do for a long time, so we are delighted to have been asked. We hope publication will be during Spring 2003 and will put further information on www.publicartonline.org.uk and in the newsletter, when we have it.
