Awards: Round One, November 2004: Re-think the Tip
Explanation statement by RMC: Unfortunately, despite attempts to sell the merits of an artistically orientated approach, the idea is still resisted by the Planning Authorities involved. In particular, regarding the proposed tip at Halkyn Quarry, Flintshire CC's planners are against any design that would attract attention rather than seamlessly blending with the landscape. So, despite our good intentions to raise the innovation of tip design, it looks like we will have to move away from this idea as it is clearly against our business interests to pursue something that is resisted by Planning Authorities. The PROJECT award will enable internationally renowned artist and architect Charles Jencks to work with RMC on the project. Large-scale subtle landforming is a key element of his work. In 2004 his Landform project sited at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art won the museum the £100,000 Gulbenkian prize. Further detailsJames Holyoak, Landscape Architect, RMC |
