'Light & Flight' Artist Commission
Deadline: May 14, 2012
£55K 'Light & Flight' Artist Commission - Illuminations
Leysdown Rose-tinted, Swale Borough Council
Light & Flight is a £55,000 artist's commission to design and install a new seaside lighting scheme for the seafront, Leysdown-on-Sea.
Light & Flight is being commissioned for Leysdown Rose-tinted by Swale Borough Council, supported by Arts Council England, Kent County Council, Leysdown Parish Council.
FrancisKnight have been appointed to manage the Light & Flight commission as part of the Rose-tinted Project.
The Promenade area is a badly lit, paved public path surrounded by penny arcades and public houses, which is a known area of anti-social behaviour. The new lighting scheme will help to address the unforgiving aspect of this public space, improve and make the seafront safer, brighter and more welcoming. It will provide an iconic artwork and visitor attraction that extends into the new visitor season due to start on the Isle of Sheppey in 2012.
The Lighting commission must be sensitive to site, enhancing the character and appearance of the area. The work must be robust and weather proofed and have a life expectancy of 10 years. Consideration to sustainability and low energy solutions would be welcomed - however creativity of design and innovative solutions will take precedence in the final commission.
Light & Flight will actively engage with the local resident community and visitor to Leysdown. Rose-tinted is looking for a lead artist of excellence and innovation who is also skilled in community participation.
FrancisKnight will be hosting a site visit in Leysdown for artists to find out more about the commission and the area on Tuesday 1st May from 12.00pm - 4.00pm. If you cannot attend this date, we welcome and would recommend you to get in touch for a brief discussion about the commission before submitting an application.
Submission will be by email to [email protected] or postal FrancisKnight Ltd, Maidstone TV Studios, New Cut Road, Maidstone, Kent
ME14 5NZ by 14th May 2012. If shortlisted, interviews will be held on 21st May 2012 (venue to be confirmed).
