'A Bathymetric Atlas of the English Lake District' on show at Locus+

Date uploaded: July 11, 2014

'A Bathymetric Atlas of the English Lake District' is a book conceived and devised by Christian Barnes and commissioned by Locus+ which contains and reveals/conceals a three dimensional terrain model of the landscape beneath the surface of the principal water bodies of the English Lake District at their various altitudes. The exhibition will be on display by appointment at Locus+, Newcastle from the 17th to the 31st July 2014.

The book measures 1.2 metres square and covers an area of approximately 50 square miles at scale. For the duration of the exhibit the pages will be turned for visitors by specially trained handlers. It takes about half an hour to descend through the pages from the surface of Wet Sleddale to the bottom of Windermere, Coniston and Wastwater.

A short film (9 minutes) has been commissioned about the project by Locus+. Click here to view.

A pamphlet containing an essay 'Double Negative' by Dr Mark Haywood which explores the context of the work in relation to scientific, picturesque and romantic art and literature is available from Locus+ directly.

Admission is free but by appointment with Locus+ at their offices.
