RELAY: King’s Cross' first dedicated art programme
Date uploaded: November 21, 2011
RELAY is King’s Cross' first dedicated art programme.
Inspired by the transformation of the area, RELAY draws on King’s Cross long-standing role as a transport interchange, the progressive opening of the development scheme, and the human chain involved in carrying out collective efforts.
Through its programme, RELAY will highlight the area’s special connections to continental Europe and to its more immediate surroundings. RELAY will explore how these two dimensions contribute to, and challenge, its constantly evolving identity.
During 2012 and 2013, RELAY will feature major temporary art commissions including Felice Varini, Richard Wentworth and Marjetica Potrc (SJ). The artworks will gradually appear in King's Cross, highlighting each part of the emerging cityscape.
RELAY is being launched with IFO by Jacques Rival, a monumental birdcage which will dominate the northern end of King’s Boulevard from mid-November 2011.
RELAY is curated by Michael Pinsky and Stéphanie Delcroix who have worked collaboratively for 8 years on projects such as 'Panacea' with artist duo Walker & Bromwich, which included five new commissions and toured to Tate Britain, John Hansard Gallery, Southampton, Cornerhouse, Manchester, and the CCC, Tours, France and Lost O, a programme of urban interventions which challenged traditional perceptions of road use to mark the opening of the largest European ‘Shared Space' scheme.
Michael and Stéphanie were appointed as curators by the King's Cross Advisory Art Panel and took up their post in November 2010.
The Art Panel members include: Andrea Rose, Director of Visual Arts at the British Council; Jenni Lomax, director of the Camden Arts Centre; James Lingwood, Co-director of Artangel; Ann Gallagher, Head of British Art at Tate; art collector Doris Lockhart; curator Flora Fairbairn; Caroline Jenkinson, Head of Arts and Tourism at the London Borough of Camden; Robert Townshend from Townshend Landscape Architects.
