First National Arts in Health Conference & Showcase

February 5, 2016, 9:00 am

Aesop, the arts and health social enterprise, has announced they will present the first national Arts in health Conference & Showcase for health decision-makers at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Friday the 5th of February 2016. This event will be attended by the Secretary of State for Health, Chair of NHS England, Chair of Arts Council England and Public Health England's Director of Health and Wellbeing.

Programme

The day's events, which carry CPD accreditation for professionals, explore how the arts can be harnessed to improve the provision of healthcare.

A plenary celebration features four performances: singing for better breathing, magic tricks for young people with hemiplegia, shared reading for mental health and dance designed to help older people avoid falls.

A choice of up to six 'tasters' from 24 available programmes show the arts in health programmes in action with older people, children/young people/families, mental health and the health workforce. Service users, health clinicians and managers contribute.

A final plenary discusses what next for the arts' contribution to healthcare and launches an online 'dating site' to connect the health sector and arts in health programmes.

Dr Michael Dixon, Chairman of the NHS Alliance and Chairman of the College of Medicine, states: 'Health decision-makers have a statutory obligation to make best use of money and to be innovators. This showcase of arts in health provision is directly relevant to some of the most pressing concerns facing commissioners. This is an event which no forward-looking commissioner should miss.'
