Richard Wentworth speaks to Helen Marriage in King's Cross on Friday 8th March

6.30pm, Friday 8th March 2013

Artist Richard Wentworth has been invited to produce a major new commission, Black Maria, at King's Cross. Working in collabroation with the Swiss architectural practice GRUPPE, the project sees an extraordinary timber structure installed in the atrium that joins the historic Granary Building with the new central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

Named after Edison’s film studio, Black Maria turns the shed which captured the first moving images, into an auditorium where passers-by are invited to develop their own uses and purposes. During the day, Black Maria acts a public space, into which one can freely walk, work and rest. At night, doors become screens, stairs double up as seats, as Black Maria turns into a space for discussions and screenings.

This Friday (8th March), Artichoke co-director Helen Marriage will discuss with Richard her celebrated view of a world free of obstacles and her imaginative approach to dissolving hindrance in the name of cultural adventure. Helen will examine what makes a city tick and how that ticking might, momentarily, be interrupted.
