Artist Commission - Way of the Roses Public Art Project, Sustrans

Deadline: January 17, 2013, 5:00 pm

Way of the Roses ‘Passing Places’ Project
A Public Art opportunity for Stamford Bridge

Stamford Bridge has been chosen as a pilot site for an exciting public art project as part of the Way of the Roses cycle trail. This 170 mile coast to coast route from Morecambe to Bridlington has been developed by Sustrans and passes through Stamford Bridge before continuing on to Pocklington and the Wolds. The project as a whole currently includes the development of terminus artworks at Morecambe and Bridlington and Passing Places artworks at Stamford Bridge, Pateley Bridge and High Bentham and is designed by Lead Artist Matt Baker as a moving history to accompany the traveller along the way. The art works will be designed to reflect the local communities in which they are sited, whilst marking traditional movements of people, historical events or phenomena.

The Stamford Bridge Steering Group, along with Rebecca Jenkins, Animateur for Stamford Bridge Passing Places, are seeking submissions from artists interested in the project.

This brief is for Stage 1 of the project, constituting a period of engagement with the local community through events and workshops in order to develop concepts, reviewing of potential locations, and producing the agreed final design ready for installation. Stage 2 of the project will constitute the realisation of the artwork, and is subject to budgetary provision being confirmed.

Submissions are welcomed from artists working in any form of visual or combined arts satisfying the requirements of the brief. The Stamford Bridge Steering Group would particularly welcome suggestions from artists working in interactive or kinetic arts.

To recognise the importance of the local elements of this project, the Steering Group are seeking artists who have strong connections with the East Riding of Yorkshire. Local knowledge and empathy will be key criteria in making the selection of the artist.

The timescale of Stage 1 of this project is March – May 2013.

Fee: £3,250
