Artist Opportunity at North Edinburgh Arts

Deadline: July 31, 2009

North Edinburgh Arts is seeking a Specialist/Artist to lead and inspire the local community and developers in their understanding of the role of the arts in a major regeneration project.

North Edinburgh Arts works through the arts to transform lives and the community in Muirhouse in North Edinburgh, an area facing severe challenges but with an exciting history of artistic activity. The area immediately surrounding North Edinburgh Arts Centre will undergo significant change in the near future, and North Edinburgh Arts aim to ensure that arts, culture and creativity lie at the heart of the redevelopment, and indeed the life of the community in general.

We therefore wish to appoint a Specialist/Artist from any art-form/discipline to engage, inform, inspire and influence the Pennywell and Muirhouse Development Group and the local community, leading to:

  • An enthusiasm amongst the key stakeholders for giving a leading role to art and creativity in the masterplanning work;

  • A budget and brief for a ‘% for art’ element to the overall development;

  • An inspiring final report that documents the project and sets out future activity.

The Specialist/Artist will need:

  • A track record of exciting and inspiring practice in their particular field
  • The ability to contribute to and inspire the PMDG, the local community and other groups at the highest level
  • An understanding of regeneration and how art and creativity can contribute to it
  • Project leadership and management skills
  • Critical creative thinking skills
  • Wide knowledge and understanding of public art practice in Scotland, the UK and further afield
  • Excellent communication skills
  • The ability to inspire and persuade a wide range of people
  • Experience of dealing with developers, local authorities or other non-arts partners

36 days work over approx 1 year, ideally starting September 2009.

Fee available around £12,000 plus reasonable travel and accommodation if required.
