Artist Opportunity – Vale of Glamorgan, Golau Caredig
Art in the Public Realm Commission

Hendre Ltd and EMP Projects are pleased to announce an opportunity for an artist to design and implement a glass artwork and bespoke service shutter design for a new building. Golau Caredig is the name given to the development of the former Theatre Royal site on Broad Street, Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Golau Caredig will provide 42 self-contained apartments, associated communal and ancillary spaces. The extra care development will offer an environment in which care and support is close at hand, but where an independent lifestyle is encouraged as far as possible.

The self-contained apartments will be supported by communal rooms.
For care and support services; a public accessible café; open reception area and communal facilities such as a hairdressers and laundry room. The aim of the public art programme is to dovetail with the emotional and well being of residents, care providers, relatives, and the local community.

The commission is comprised of 2 elements as follows:

  1. Integrated Glass Designs: The design and development of an integrated glass design to the main glazed elevation at the front entrance to Golau Caredig. The glass Atrium extends from the ground to the fifth floor. Given the relatively modest budget and large potential surface area,  the commissioners are aware that the artwork may not extend through all of this area, and as such the artist would be required to maximize the available budget through their choice of manufacturing and application methods. In addition, the commissioners would require the glass design to be highlighted through a lighting scheme.
  2. Bespoke service shutter: In addition, the design that is reflected in the glazing artwork should correlate with a design to the service shutter located at the side entrance to Golau Caredig. At present the proposed service screen visually jars with the remaining build design.  As the shutters are at ground level it has been identified as an area that will be seen from  the street level and the passing public.

The overall budget for this project is £47,000.00.
