Call for Submissions for a Permanent Artistic Creation (City Of Geneva, Switzerland)

Deadline: March 16, 2012

Call for Submissions for a Permanent Artistic Creation (City Of Geneva, Switzerland)

The Contemporary Art Fund of the City of Geneva (FMAC) - in collaboration with the city departments concerned and their representative architects - is launching a call for submissions to create an artistic work in the context of the construction of a school and public complex comprising a school, with a gymnastics room and a swimming pool, a children’s play area, a multi-purpose room and high quality public spaces. The construction of the architectural project « little ship », which has just been defined both as a place for teaching and for social contact within the quarter, is planned for completion at the end of the summer break 2015 on the site of Chandieu.

This first stage is intended to permit the FMAC to select artists who approach in a relevant and appropriate manner the issues at stake in this architectural, urban planning and landscaping project and who address, in particular, the place of art in public spaces and its relation with everyday experience, as well as its acceptance by the population.

Candidates are invited to summarise in an accompanying letter of 2 A4 pages their proposed concepts and/or analyses of the site and the issues involved. This letter should also include an indication of the relation and collaboration that the artist envisages in particular with the representative architects.

A jury composed of contemporary art and architectural experts will select 8 to 10 successful artist candidates on the basis of the files received (1st stage). These pre-qualified artists will be invited to participate in an ideas contest and to develop their projects in collaboration with the representative architects. After deliberation by the second jury, one or more projects will be retained for implementation. The budget for producing the artistic works is estimated at 800,000 CHF, within which the artist’s fees shall not exceed 150,000 CHF.

The call for submissions is open to all artists, irrespective of nationality or age.

GENERAL CONDITIONS FOR PARTICIPATION:

  • be a professional artist (no longer undergoing art training);
  • have produced at least one emblematic work in the public domain and/ or in relation to architecture;
  • both individual and collective submissions are admitted.

SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS REQUIRED (FORMAT A4):

  • a covering letter and/or letter of intention of maximum two A4 pages;
  • a complete curriculum vitae, including training, exhibitions, creations in public areas, prizes, scholarships and distinctions obtained as well as visuals that permit a valid appreciation of the artist’s work;
