Creative Practitioner - Public realm, The Hamilton Project

Deadline: Monday 17th September 2012

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) - Community Engagement and Public Realm

Creative Practitioner

TfGM have invested in high quality, accessible transport interchanges that relate to the environs in which they are situated and to the residents that they serve; investment has been made in integral artworks that have been designed and created by professional artists through consultation and engagement with local people.

Proposals are sought from creative practitioners to design and install creative interventions and implement a element of engagement with local community groups that will influence and develop public art and creative public realm development on and within a new build Public Transport Interchange which is planned for Wythenshawe.

Approach

Work will be site specific, with designs arrived at via consultation and engagement with local schools, colleges, youth groups, community groups and users of the interchange.

The designs will be developed through close collaboration with the architect, and design team. The strength of dialogue between the artist/s and these stakeholders will be crucial to the overall success of the. Any draft and final designs will be submitted for approval to the steering group for the project at agreed deadlines.

Themes/considerations

Below are some themes/considerations identified by the Withit group as to be explored:

  • A design that changes helps change the perception of young people in Wythenshawe
  • A design that makes people get off the metrolink and explore Wythenshawe
  • A landmark - unexpected
  • Interactive - encourages people to explore (the young people were inspired by the experience they had at a recent visit to ZKM - Click here for more details)
  • Uses multimedia (that is easy to use) - (the young people were inspired by the experience they had at recent visit to The Public, Birmingham - the interactive galleries - click here for more details)

Timescales

  • w/c 28th Sept 2012 - Contract to commence
  • Jan 2013 - Work start on site
