Design Team Artist Opportunity: MADE
Deadline: May 16, 2013, 5:00 pm
'Tamed' is a project which aims to facilitate artist engagement with a planned programme of flood defence works in the Witton area of Birmingham.
It is funded by the Arts Council England and is the result of an approach to MADE from the Environment Agency who recognised these necessary works have the potential to degrade the quality of the environment. MADE's ambition is to turn this threat into an opportunity: transforming the environment and local people’s experience of it.
Through 'Tamed', MADE will commission and facilitate three artists residencies to work with communities, engineers and landscape architects. The Design Team Artist is the second of these, the third, a Community Artist/Maker will be commissioned later in 2013.
Design Team Artist Role
The Design Team Artist will work closely with the project team at the Environment Agency on the design of the flood defences. A key aim of this commission is for the artistic practice to impact on the overall design of the scheme and explore how the involvement of an artist can bring actual change to what is primarily an engineering and environmental focused process.
The artist should have a track record of working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary design teams on largescale infrastructure projects and an understanding of how to affect real change through the planning process.
The role is approximately one day per week from June to December 2013 and then less frequent sessions until May 2014. It is anticipated that the earlier months of the project will be the most intensive and require the most time commitment. There will be a minimum of 20 days work, likely more, at a daily rate of £250.
