East Sussex Library and Information Service Commission
Deadline: December 8, 2014, 9:00 am
East Sussex Library and Information Service is seeking an artist to create a surface design for a window made up of four panels for the new Newhaven Library. This commission would suit artists with some track record in this field who wish to expand their experience or skills, or an artist with some track record in other techniques but no experience in transferring their work on to glass. There is a budget to provide mentoring to support to enable the selected artist to learn new techniques. Artists should demonstrate clearly how they would benefit from the mentoring opportunity.
Transparent is a series of three site specific public art commissions to contribute to the reconfiguration of three libraries in East Sussex. The chosen artist will be asked to share their creative process to achieve a transparency of the way they work. This method will be tested as a way of engaging the public and promoting the value of the work when each piece takes its place in the new libraries. The approach provides an alternative to the traditional public consultation route.
Newhaven is located on the south coast between Brighton and Eastbourne. It is a town at the beginning of a regeneration process with a small town centre surrounded by a ring road. The library is moving to a significantly larger shop premises and will have two entrances, one from the High Street and one from the back of the building. The commission is to allow an artist to create a design for the surface of the window at the back of the building which overlooks a bus shelter serving several routes and a busy car park for the town centre. It is likely that the new library will become a pedestrian route from the north side of town. The library investment aims to inject some confidence in to the town and we believe that a highly visible art commission will contribute to this.
The Selection Panel wishes the window to be eye catching and celebrate Newhaven as a place. The design should take its inspiration from the town rather than the library. The panel also wish the design to be colourful. It is also important that the design still allows people to see into the library.
Total Budget: £6,000.
