Exploratory Laboratory Commissions: Art, Science and the Coast

Deadline: September 5, 2011

Exploratory Laboratory (Ex Lab) is offering artists a unique opportunity to collaborate with scientists on the Jurassic Coast.

Ex Lab is a visual arts project responding to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, a 95 mile section of stunning Dorset and East Devon coastline. Ex Lab brings together artists with earth scientists in a collaborative project investigating our understanding of this special coastal environment. The project will present new work arising from this arts and science dialogue during July - September 2012 set against the backdrop of the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events taking place in Weymouth and Portland.

Ex Lab is inviting expressions of interest from visual arts, craft and media artists for 5 specific commissions plus a number of ‘open brief’ opportunities as part of the Ex Lab programme. The commissions offer a supported research period, fee, production and installation costs to create site responsive work for temporary installation at outdoor and indoor locations on the coast and in galleries and non-arts venues across Dorset.

Deadline for applications: Monday 5 September 2011.

For full details of commissions please see attached brief, download from website www.bigpic.org.uk or email: [email protected]

Ex Lab is funded by: Arts Council England, The National Trust, West Dorset District Council, Dorset County Council and Big Picture partners

PLEASE NOTE: Commission opportunities as described in the brief are offered subject to final notification of agreed match funding not yet confirmed at time of posting.
