Deadline: December 15, 2011, 12:00 pm

Freelance Urban Artist, Blackpool Council

Blackpool Council is seeking to appoint approximately 8-10 urban artists to undertake the internal decoration of the newly constructed Myplace building, an exciting new building designed to be used by young people. It is envisaged that these spaces will be enhanced through urban art.

A Young People’s Advisory Group was established at the inception of the project and they have worked with the design team throughout the design and construction process. The appointed artists are required to facilitate a series of creative consultation workshops with the young people, which Blackpool Council Youth Service will support.

Interested artists are requested to respond by forwarding an expression of interest with the following documentation, by no later than noon Thursday 15th December:

  • Max 2 x A4 title / CV / web site links;
  • Max 3 x A4 sheets depicting examples of previous work;
  • Max 1 x A4 sheet of written text in response to the brief including initial concept, ideas and consultation methods.

Submitted documentation will be reviewed by Blackpool Council, Young People and Robin Ross as artist advisor. Robin Ross has previously managed the Blackpool Urban Art Fair.

A shortlist will be drawn from applicants following which a formal interview process will occur on Thursday 12th January. Based on artist circumstances this could be via video conference or telephone.

The contract will be completed for March 2012. Subject to further discussions with the artist, initial concept designs will be required by January 2012, approval of detailed designs by the end of January 2012 with the installation of the work occurring over a 3-4 day period towards the end of February 2012. The aforementioned timescales are subject to further discussions with the appointed artists.

The brief represents an opportunity to apply for a commission of approximately £800 - £1200. This will include all design fees, travel expenses, transportation costs, materials, construction and installations. Payment and timetables will be agreed upon appointment.

For a full artist brief, including detailed information about the Myplace building, please email Clancy Mason at [email protected]

Artists are free to submit expressions of interest for one or more spaces in the building.
