Ordnance Survey Public Art Commission

Deadline: May 19, 2014, 5:00 pm

Following its relocation, Ordnance Survey is commissioning a work of public art to be sited at the front of its building at Explorer House, Adanac Park in Southampton. The brief is for a single three dimensional iconic artwork.

The artwork is intended to:

  • Represent the past and continuing association of Ordnance Survey with the Southampton area
  • Reflect both the historical mapping and the current emphasis on digital imagery
  • Reflect Ordnance Survey’s identity as an organisation
  • Be of contemporary design
  • Reflect the innovative ethos of Ordnance Survey

As part of the commission the artist is encouraged to involve Ordnance Survey staff and communities from the area surrounding Explorer House in the design and production process.

The artist will be responsible for the construction process, the suitability of materials for public display and any associated support mechanisms should have an expected lifespan of at least 25 years and should not require independently provided utilities (water, electricity or gas).  No significant maintenance costs should be expected.

The budget for the artwork is £50,000.
