Public Art Commissions for Barnsley Town Centre

Deadline: August 18, 2014, 12:00 pm

Beam has been appointed by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council to
deliver the Barnsley Public Art Programme, they are currently seeking to commission two artists to create two artworks in two different locations. Each artwork will be sited in a key pedestrian gateway to Barnsley Town Centre.

Artists should consider Barnsley’s lesser-known industrial heritage such as in the areas of glassworks, linen and the Barnsley Canister Company and look to echo this industrial heritage within their work.

Site 1: On the approach to Barnsley Interchange from Eldon Street before the bridge (research could link to the old Paper Mill). See Section 12.
Site 2: Near the pedestrian crossing from Morrison’s towards the Alhambra, New St, to the rear of the Wilkinsons entrance (research could link to the Barnsley Canister Company).

It will be important for the selected artist to engage the public and local
interest groups in the development of their concept, before submitting a
detailed design for planning permission.

Beam is also setting up a parallel brief with art and design students from
Barnsley College and will arrange opportunities for each artist to present to the students once concept designs are in place and provide critiques to the students half way through and at end of their project.

The key aim of these commissions is to create permanent artworks on two key pedestrian routes into the town centre which reflects the heritage of the town and welcomes residents and visitors alike.

Objectives

  • Create artworks that reflect Barnsley’s lesser-known industrial heritage
  • Create artworks that enhance the public experience of their journey into /from the town (consider experience during day and night)
  • Contribute as a professional artist to a parallel student project
  • Install artworks that become an important addition to Barnsley’s commitment to public art and supports the cultural sector and visitor economy

The total fee per commission is £15,500 plus VAT (if applicable)
This fee includes engagement workshops, concept design, detailed design, production, materials, installation (including foundations as applicable), public works, attendance at meetings and all other costs associated with the work /any subsidiary commissions and expenses.
