Public art commission for Plymouth at the Minster Church of St Andrew

Deadline: January 30, 2015, 5:00 pm

The Art Commissioning Group (ACG) of the Minster Church of St Andrew, Plymouth, announces a new and exciting commission, entitled ‘Vision for the Pillars’, to achieve the creation of an iconic work of art for the City of Plymouth. The architectural site-specific public artwork will adorn the existing pillars at the entrance to the thoroughfare and public open space that link the city to the Minster.

Expressions of Interest are now invited from artists, or groups of artists, to develop a work of public art which should stimulate generations to reflect and respond to the unique link between the heritage of the minster and the city, whilst encouraging exploration of further significant works of art inside the minster. The site offers the opportunity for an artist to investigate any number of creative and material approaches. The resultant work could comprise of one or more of the following elements: sculpture; metalwork; glass; stonework; lighting etc.

The value of the commission is £20.000 (inclusive of VAT). This must allow for all necessary design, treatment of surfaces, installation, erection and all fixings to secure the feature etc. There is no payment to artists submitting the initial Expression of Interest (Stage 1). Up to 3 artists will be selected to proceed to Stage 2 and to develop a full proposal with sketches and a maquette. £500 is available for each artist selected for Stage 2.

The Expression of Interest application form can be obtained by sending an email to the Secretary at [email protected]. The complete application form should be returned to the Secretary at [email protected] by the deadline of 5pm on Friday 30 January 2015. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted by 20 February 2015.
