Reel Walthamstow: The Scene Moving Image Commissions 2014

Deadline: March 21, 2014, 10:00 am

London Borough of Waltham Forest (LBWF) wishes to invite inventive proposals from established artists, animators and filmmakers based in London or the South East, to produce a high quality moving image project, which will provide opportunities for local engagement and collaboration through development and/or production. This participatory process will lead to a short moving image work for single screen projection in the new Empire Cinema at The Scene, Walthamstow Town Centre following its opening at the end of 2014.

The REEL WALTHAMSTOW commissions offer an opportunity for artists, animators, filmmakers to explore, and respond to what is local and particular to Walthamstow and its communities, as well as responding to the key themes of Renewal and Connection.

The Scene at Cleveland Place, Hoe Street, Walthamstow is a new development on the former Arcade site. The Scene will comprise a nine screen 1,200 seat Empire Cinema, several new restaurants and shops and 121 homes. Empire Cinemas, best known for its flagship site in Leicester Square, operates 162 screens across 16 cinemas in the UK, will be a welcome addition to cultural life in Walthamstow. The cinema will open at the end of 2014 and will provide a valuable boost to the growth of the evening economy and to Waltham Forest Council's ambitious regeneration of Walthamstow Town Centre.

Funds have been allocated to spend on an Arts and Engagement Programme in the Walthamstow Town Centre area as part of the Section 106 contributions from The Scene development.

A working group and Ashley McCormick Projects (AMP) have been appointed to deliver and support a number of creative projects unfolding over the next two years. The REEL WALTHAMSTOW commissions form part of this series, which will seek to increase cultural, learning and social opportunities for local traders, residents and visitors, contribute to characterising the sense of place and bringing new life to Walthamstow Town Centre and its environs.
