Tender for major public art commission for Kirkby Town Centre, Knowsley Borough Council

Knowsley MBC are seeking an experienced artist or artist team to work with the project developers and the local community to create permanent artworks for Kirkby town centre.

The available budget is £360,000 to cover three different town centre sites and integrated public realm features.

Timescale: April 2012 - May 2013
Tender response deadline: 1pm Thursday 24th May 2012.

An artist/artist team will be appointed to engage with local stakeholders, design, produce and install public art which:

  • Connects to the local area, its history and heritage
  • Relates to the ‘Knowsley Alphabet’ a unique connecting theme for public art across the borough (new and existing)
  • Provides enough flexibility to be able to tailor part of it to also reflect local history, heritage and innovative ideas from and about Kirkby
  • Contributes to the diversity of experience apparent throughout the development
  • Provides opportunities for each piece of work to be conceived as an integral part of the overall scheme
  • Initial community research and engagement will take place prior to the artists’ appointment, although the chosen artists will be expected to work closely with the local community and stakeholders to develop the final designs for the artworks
  • KMBC officers will liaise with, and support the chosen artist/s.

Commissioned artworks will need to be:

  • Original, and of high quality
  • Reflect and celebrate the overarching concept which may relate to local heritage, history of the site and its future aspirations
  • Fit for purpose, robust, comply with relevant health and safety requirements, low maintenance
