Transparent Newhaven - Public Art Commission
Deadline: September 7, 2014, 9:00 am
East Sussex Library and Information Service is seeking an early career artist to create a window in three glass panels for the new Newhaven Library. Support from an experienced artist will be provided as mentoring for the successful applicant.
Transparent combines three site specific public art commissions to contribute to the reconfiguration of three libraries in East Sussex. Two of the commissions will be on glass, the third (Seaford) revealed by glass. The three artists will be asked to share their creative process to achieve a transparency of intent. This method will be tested as a way of engaging the public and promoting the value of the work when each piece takes its place in the new libraries. The approach provides an alternative to the traditional public consultation route.
Transparent – Newhaven
Newhaven is located on the south coast between Brighton and Eastbourne. It is a town at the beginning of a regeneration process with a small town centre surrounded by a ring road. The library is moving to a significantly larger shop premises and will have two entrances, one from the High Street and one from the bus station. The commissioners are looking for a glass artist to design the window which overlooks the bus station to attract interest in the library.
Budget - £6,000 to include materials, insurance, delivery to site, installation and “Transparent” process
