Two Public Art Commissions: Butetown

Deadline: March 5, 2012, 5:00 pm

Artist Opportunity – Two Public Art Commissions
Butetown Community Centre & Butetown Youth Pavilion, Cardiff.

Vinci Construction UK and Cardiff Council has appointed ZE Projects to work with them to develop and manage a public art programme for the redevelopment of both Butetown Youth Pavilion and Butetown Community Centre.

1) Butetown Youth Pavilion

The commission is comprised of 2 elements as follows:

Scheme 1. The commissioned artist will design building signage that will be accommodated on the external elevation of the proposed lift shaft and will advertise the building’s name ‘Youth Pavilion’. The artwork may incorporate lighting and interactive elements and may be a direct result of the engagement process with the Youth Pavilion’s users.

Scheme 2. The commissioned artist will develop an engagement programme with users of the Youth Pavilion that will result in the creation of an internal ‘Urban Artwork’ for a space to be identified inside the building. The artist will work with the young people to identify the appropriate location of the work and to define the scope and approach to the work. The work can make use of film/video/internet/new media technologies or may be 2-dimensional wall based in its execution.
The overall budget for this project is £39,000.00.

2) Butetown Youth Pavilion and Butetown Community Centre

This Commission is for specialist glass artist(s) to design and develop an integrated glass artwork for the ground floor level glazed elevation at the main entrance and café, at the front of the building and if possible, extending to the first and second floors.

As the building is an important community resource, engagement with the local Butetown community is an essential element of this commission. In particular the commissioned artist(s) will engage with the Butetown Community Centre Committee and the various groups who regularly use the Centre currently meeting in alternative local venues while the development progresses. The artist(s) will offer high quality opportunities for participation in learning, social and innovative art activities.
The overall budget for this project is £39,000.00.
