Withernsea Fishing Compound & Environs Public Art Project

Deadline: March 24, 2015, 12:00 pm

East Riding of Yorkshire Council, working with the Withernsea and South East Holderness Regeneration Partnership (WSEHRP) are developing a new project in the Seaside Town of Withernsea. The brief is to commission an Artist to engage with the local community to create a focal point and physical representation of Withernsea’s fishing heritage in the form of public art.

The Public Artist will research the aspirations of the community for a public art project at the fishing compound helping to create a unique art project for the Commercial Fishing Compound and surrounding gardens that reflects the culture and fishing heritage of Withernsea.

A key outcome from this project is that residents develop a sense of shared ownership in the artwork and that cultural and social capital in Withernsea is enhanced though effective engagement. The project aims to culminate in the creation and installation of a vertical structure in the gardens and a feature on the fencing of the fishing compound.

The Artist will:

  • Work with the steering group of key stakeholders to take ownership of and drive the project
  • Carry out community engagement activities to promote the project, encourage public participation and explore ideas for themes/concepts
  • Work with the Steering Group to analyse the outcomes from phase one of the community engagement in order to develop and agree the artist’s design
  • Liaise with project partners and the local steering group
  • Progress local research on Withernsea Fishing Heritage to develop visionary concepts and proposals
  • Interact with schools/community groups and individuals
  • Draw up initial design proposals and engage with the community through events/workshops/exhibitions to develop ideas
  • Present initial design proposals for presentation to the Steering Group
  • Develop/create final designs for wider community consultation/exhibition
  • Procure materials for art works
  • Create and install the final artwork within the allocated budget
  • Assist with the evaluation of the project
