AOI Illustration Awards 2013 Winners Announced

The Association of Illustrators (AOI) was delighted to announce the overall winners of the AOI Illustration Awards 2013 at an awards celebration held at Somerset House on Wednesday 8th October 2013.

The exhibition was on display at Somerset House throughout October and attracted over 12,000 visitors. The exhibition which features highlights from this year’s shortlist now tours across the UK, host venues include Swansea Metropolitan University, Blackpool & Fylde College, Nuneaton Museum and Art Gallery and Guildford Museum.

Swansea Metropolitan University opens the exhibition from Monday 11th November to Friday 13th December.
Monday to Friday: 8:30am – 8:00pm.
Saturday: 9:00am – 1:00pm.

PUBLIC REALM
Professional Winner
: Jane Reiseger
Title: Wayfinding and interior graphics for the new Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, Australia
Use: Illustrations were used for interior graphics and way-finding throughout the 8 levels of the hospital.
Commissioner: Buro North for the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne
Judges' comments: This is a really enlightened, ambitious and inspirational project. It was a courageous and very successful decision to work with one illustrator throughout the building. The illustration is excellent and has been applied with real design skill to to enliven the whole building and improve its functionality. This is an exceptional example of illustration transforming an important public building and of an illustrator working collaboratively with a design team.

New Talent Winner: Joe Caslin
Title: Our Nation's Sons
Use: Large-scale public installation of portrait drawings of teenage boys in Glasgow.

Course MFA Illustration
Judges' comments: This is a hands down winner for us. It is such a strong project in terms of its aims and outcomes. We are impressed that the participants are all 16 years old and getting involved in such a big project. The project combines street art and illustration very effectively and has a strong message. It is a beautiful thing.
