Alexandra Reinhardt Memorial Award 2013 to be hosted by mima

engage and the Alexandra Reinhardt Memorial Award (ARMA) are delighted to announce that the 2013 artist in residence and commission will be hosted by mima, Middlesbrough.

ARMA was established in memory of the artist Alexandra Reinhardt and is supported by the Max Reinhardt Charitable Trust. The annual Award enables an artist or artists to undertake a residency working with children and young people to create an artwork in the public realm.

The selected artist/s will be resident at mima, from January 2013 for ten weeks. They will work with young Creative Apprentices and with children, young people and families.

A semi-permanent artwork will be installed in mima’s garden in Summer 2013. The artwork, which may take the form of a sound sculpture, will aim to capture the essence of Middlesbrough’s past, its artistic present and the future lives of its communities.

Jane Sillis, Director of engage, said: “We are very pleased to be working with the Alexandra Reinhardt Memorial Award and with mima on this exciting project. Our research has shown that children and young people can benefit enormously from working with artists on live projects.”

Veronica Reinhardt, Trustee of the Max Reinhardt Charitable Trust, said: “I am delighted that mima has been selected to host ARMA 2013 with a project that offers both an opportunity for an artist to have an artwork curated by the museum and to work with mima's Creative Apprentices and the young people of Middlesbrough. This continues ARMA’s work to reach out to families and young people at the highest level of artistic practice.”

Marie Neeson, mima Education and Audience Development Manager, said: “We are thrilled to have been chosen to host ARMA 2013. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to extend our work with children and young people in Middlesbrough, offering a unique opportunity to work closely with an artist.”

The opportunity to apply to be the 2013 Alexandra Reinhardt Memorial Award artist in residence will be made available in September 2012.
