Green light for Southmead Hospital and arts strategy
Date uploaded: March 29, 2010
The construction of a new £430m super hospital for Bristol is underway. North Bristol NHS Trust and PFI developers Carillion have signed contracts and building work has already started on the new 800 bed acute hospital on the Southmead site. It is due to open its doors to patients in 2014.
As part of the Carillion team, Willis Newson has been developing an arts strategy for the new hospital since 2007. They are now recruiting artists for a £1.4m arts programme. Plans include a series of major public art commissions and projects designed to engage and involve staff, patients and the local community. The new hospital will also feature an outdoor performance space, a community arts room and a series of gallery spaces for changing exhibitions.
At our visioning event for the project we invited members of the local community, staff and artists to give us their ideas for art at the new hospital. You can see a film of this here
