In the Eyes of the Animal selected for New Frontier programme at Sundance Film Festival 2016

In the Eyes of the Animal by Marshmallow Laser Feast will be shown at Sundance Film Festival 2016. A showcase for the world's leading new cinema, documentary, installation, virtual reality, performance and more, taking place anually in Utah.

In the Eyes of the Animal will be presented as part of the 10th anniversary New Frontier programme at Sundance Film Festival 2016 in January next year following its premier at Grizedale Forest as part of AND Festival 2015. This immersive virtual reality experience has since been in demand at arts festivals across Europe. Commissioned by Abandon Normal Devices (AND) and Forestry Commission England, In the Eyes of the Animal is a creative reimagining of the forest from the viewpoint of three native woodland animals.

Selected by the Sundance Institute founded by Robert Redford, In the Eyes of the Animal will be presented in January at Sundance as part of the of the New Frontiers programme, celebrating new work from some of the world's leading media research labs.

Creative studio Marshmallow Laser Feast used techniques including lidar and CT scanning, photogrammetry and a bespoke 360º aerial camera and custom software to create In the Eyes of the Animal. Viewers are invited to navigate the 360º film from inside a specially designed headset, accompanied by a binaural soundtrack. All footage and audio recordings were sourced in Grizedale Forest, creating a new perspective on a unique landscape.

In the Eyes of the Animal was commissioned by Abandon Normal Devices and Forestry Commission England’s Forest Art Works programme. Produced by Abandon Normal Devices and Marshmallow Laser Feast. Supported using public funding by Arts Council England and Forestry Commission England.

Abandon Normal Devices (AND) commission groundbreaking and imaginative projects, gathering an eclectic mix of academics, filmmakers, scientists and artists to hijack the imagination and abandon traditional settings and partnerships. AND Festival is the UK’s first roaming festival of new cinema, art and digital culture, mapping a different terrain (UK and internationally) every two years.

This September AND Festival was hosted by partners Forestry Commission England’s Forest Art Works programme and supported using public funding by Arts Council England with additional support from South Lakeland District Council.
