Launch of Richard Woods’ public art commission - Bath

Date uploaded: March 5, 2014

Richard Woods is renowned for his signature architectural transformations, paintings and sculpture that fold the history of decorative arts, functional design and graphic language into intoxicatingly witty plays with image and surface.

Woods was specially commissioned to make an artwork for the construction work hoardings which face Solsbury Court, a student accommodation block at the University of Bath. The art work was commissioned to create a lively, creative environment for students and staff whilst construction work takes place.

Over a 100m of hoardings have been painstakingly hand stencilled by the artist and a large team of assistants. In a new departure for the artist, the flat grass pattern has been stencilled directly onto the hoardings, rather than using his usual method of printing from a carved woodblock. He recently completed a large permanent external commission with a similar pattern in Rome in September 2012.

Richard Woods was educated at Winchester School of Art, 1985-88 and Slade School of Fine Art,1988-89. He lives & works in London. Woods has exhibited extensively internationally and been commissioned to create permanent works across the globe.
