Artist Noëmi Lakmaier has been awarded a residency at mac as part of a joint commission in partnership with DASH as part of the IN (Disability in the Mainstream) project. Noëmi – an experienced artist, performer and curator, will be in residence for a year and aims to work collaboratively with Disabled artists to produce a body of ‘awkward’ work that has the potential to change or ‘disable’ the space it inhabits, alongside a programme of talks with audiences and artists.
IN is a visual arts programme supported by Arts Council England to increase the number of Disabled and Deaf artists commissioned by mainstream galleries and to raise the profile of Disability Arts to audiences locally, regionally and nationally. Working closely with DASH, a Disability arts development organisation, mac birmingham is one of four gallery partners, which includes; The Herbert Museum and Art Gallery, Coventry, Arnolfini, Bristol and Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery.
Noëmi Lakmaier said: ‘I am thrilled to have been appointed as Disability Curator in Residence at mac. This is a rare and important opportunity to bring together some of the most exciting Disabled artists working today at a major mainstream venue, and to create a show with real impact. I am very much looking forward to the year ahead.’
Craig Ashley Visual Arts Producer at mac birmingham commented: ‘We’re delighted that Noëmi’s work will reach the many diverse communities that visit mac. We’re committed to offering a visual arts programme that challenges and speaks to our visitors and supporters, which at the same time offers artists the opportunity to extend their practice and audience reach further. We look forward to working with Noëmi in the coming year.’
Mike Layward Artist Director at DASH added: ‘DASH is very excited that Noemi Lakmaier has been commissioned as curator in residence at mac. Firstly the potential of a Disabled artist of Noemi’s calibre working with audiences and artists at mac and secondly the opportunity will enable Noemi to develop further as an artist and curator.’
Noëmi will start her residency this May, culminating with an exhibition in March 2015. For further information visit: www.dasharts.org.
