Liverpool Biennial 2012 includes The Unexpected Guest, an exhibition of specially commissioned and pre-existing work across the city; The John Moores Painting Prize; Bloomberg New Contemporaries, City States and the Sky Arts Ignition Series/Tate Liverpool commission by Doug Aitken.

The Unexpected Guest explores notions of hospitality. Leading and emerging artists have been commissioned to make permanent and temporary public artworks as well as long-term community-based projects. The artists have been invited to question our ability to be ‘unprepared’. Can we afford to be hospitable in these critical times?

Each weekend of the Biennial has been curated to ensure that each of the 10 weeks of the festival has a distinctive and exciting programme that includes film, performance, comedy, music, archaeology, expeditions, poetry, dance and a Young Peoples’ Biennial.

For the second time guest cities have been invited to participate in the Biennial, City States 2012 brings together over 60 artists from seven countries, exploring the dynamics between cities and states with new and existing works. City States exhibitions have been confirmed from the following cities: Belo Horizonte, Copenhagen, GdaƄsk, Hong Kong, Incheon, Lisbon, Makhachkala, Reykjavik, Oslo, Taipei, Vilnius and Wellington.
