22 July 2013 marked the 2nd anniversary of the Oslo terrorist attacks. Earlier this month an open call was launched for artists and architects to propose designs for two memorial sites to commemorate the atrocities. What if the artists considering the 22/7 memorial competition, considered not simply public space, but also the nature of public time and the unspoken fear of public forgetting? The atrocity of Breivik’s action was to halt the future potential of 69 young people. How might that future be honoured in an artwork? Perhaps such a memorial should consider its potential to be productive rather than just contemplative, to urge us to look forward, rather than simply to look back and remember? In her latest Studio to Situations blog Situations Director, Claire Doherty considers this and questions how artists might approach the unspeakable.

A good book is a timeless way to idle the hours away. There was a story once told of four Bristolian characters across two decades whose lives have been transformed by loves lost and letters found. Set in the shadow of a derelict former Royal Mail sorting office, its the story which unfolds in Missorts Volume II, written by Tony White. Earlier this week we announced the Book Cover Design Prize; a challenge to artists, designers and illustrators based in the South West to show us how this tale might be expressed through a striking book cover. Situations are seeking an intriguing and eye-catching design for the first printed limited edition of White's novella, which will be published in autumn 2013. Click here to find out how to enter.
