Antoine Bertin - Embedded in the Forest

This is the Forestry Commission England's second Embedded Artist in Residence instalment. Over the past 18 months Sound Artist Antoine Bertin has been exploring England's Public Forest Estate and developing his research, responses and new work.

Antoine has been travelling from cities to Forestry Commission sites, exploring through listening at the edges of the forest. He has been exploring where our relationship with forests begins and where it ends. Along the way, he has built up his own toolkit that comprises actions such as diving through branches with ears wide open, invented devices such as radio antennae made from casts of burrows and attempts to find ethical ways to use wild animals as mobile sound recordists.

In August last year, NASA's Explorer 1 became the first human-made object to reach the edge of our solar system. At the same time, Antoine found himself in the forest with wildlife rangers and astronomers, attempting to discover how to listen to humans from the perspective of a fox. Now, the artist is creating an opportunity for the public to follow a wildlife ranger through the streets of London as a way of learning about animals through the city and about the city through the animals: A piece for urban fox, wildlife ranger, and choir.

Searching for ways to connect with the frequently elusive environment, Antoine has come to believe that exploring forests and the creatures that inhabit them can offer us a chance to make sense of our wider world and even what lies beyond that. Antoine is now working on a visitor audio guide for the edges of forests that will be launched in 2014.
