Kern Baby by Faye Claridge

Date uploaded: March 2, 2015

'The Kern Baby' is a new enigmatic commission for Compton Verney by artist Faye Claridge and will be on show in the grounds as part of Art in the park from the 14th of March to the 13th of December 2015.

Resonating with Compton Verney’s extensive collection of British Folk Art, the new sculpture is based on the photographic work of Sir Benjamin Stone who travelled the country recording unusual festivals and customs. A Kern Baby also known as a harvest queen which was a doll decorated with corn (grain) flowers and carried in festivals of the kern at harvest time.

This Kern Baby will be situated in the historic grounds of Compton Verney for 2015 and will also become a prop for an extraordinary new photographic work by Claridge involving the local community.
