Rise – a new sculpture by Wolfgang Buttress

Date uploaded: September 26, 2011

A new sculpture by Wolfgang Buttress entitled Rise was officially launched on 16th September 2011. Rise is located at Broadway Roundabout, at the junction of the Westlink and M1 motorway, one of the main gateways to Belfast.

Standing at 37.5 metres tall, a geodesic sphere is suspended within a larger 30 metre diametre sphere by discreet, pre tensioned, galvanised wires.

The sculpture can be seen in the round from any angle; it welcomes views from all vistas and political and religious persuasions. The structural supports make reference to the marshlands which previously grew here.

This is the winning design from an international competition heralding a new dawn for Belfast.

Belfast City Council have uploaded a timelapse video onto youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=linOOqrz3xk
