A LOCK IS A GATE
A LOCK IS A GATE is an album of songs and drawings. It follows a group of young voyagers who embark on a part-real, part-imagined journey through London. As they travel from the Tube and onto a canal boat, they see puzzling sights and dazzling colours. They make songs about themselves and share their dreams for a better world in which to grow up. This launch event celebrates the completion of a special edition of the CD album artwork, and announces plans for a forthcoming artwork created as part of the project for display above the escalators at Bethnal Green Tube station. After the launch the CD album will be available for free for a limited period at the Museum of Childhood. The songs and artwork will also be available to download for free from Art on the Underground’s website, art.tfl.gov.uk
Central line series
A LOCK IS A GATE is part of Art on the Underground’s Central line series of artists’ projects taking place from 2011 to 2012. The series is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
Laburnum Boat Club
Laburnum Boat Club in Hackney is a social education facility, concerned with the development of children and young people of all abilities, primarily through watersport activities.

A LOCK IS A GATE was selected from a series of invited proposals for commission by Art on the Underground in partnership with the Barbican Art Gallery, Chisenhale Gallery, Create Festival and the Whitechapel Gallery.
