Thursday 8th December 2011, 4-7pm

Public Wisdom: a three-year programme of workshops, events and commissions in which local elders will re-imagine the public realm in Islington

Launch: Thursday 8th December 2011, 4-7pm

Committee Rooms 5 and 6
Islington Town Hall
Upper Street, London N1 2UD

"Public art can be breathtaking; awe-inspiring; life-changing. It can alter perception; transform architectures and landscapes; enrich communities; enliven social spaces and re-ignite the embers of cultural renewal. Who better than our elders, the senior members of our communities, whose lives have given them a wealth of knowledge and a richness of experience, to be custodians and practitioners of this work?"

Cubitt Education runs regular art workshops for older people at community centres across Islington. Public Wisdom has emerged from the programme: as a series of projects exploring how older people can contribute fully and creatively to local public life. The launch will provide opportunities to learn more about Public Wisdom and find out how to get involved, alongside:

  • an exhibition of work in which members of Cubitt Seniors Art School at Claremont Project have re-imagined the spaces around Angel and Islington Green
  • drawings produced by older and younger artists during a visit to Islington Council’s meeting on 30th June 2011.

Public Wisdom is supported by the Baring Foundation, the Monument Trust and Arts Council, England, and organised in partnership with Islington Council, Claremont Project and other local community organisations.
