Public Art - Getting Commissions Weekend
Central Saint Martins
12th-13th October 2013
This course is aimed at artists, arts administrators and creative practitioners at any level of their career, who would like to learn more about getting their artwork into the public realm.
The course aims to look at the whole process of creating a permanent public artwork from applications stage, to dealing with stakeholders, community engagement, design, fabrication and installation.
The course will be taught through a number of seminars and practical workshops as well an external visits to look at examples of public art in the area. Throughout the weekend each student will be using a real life commissioning brief to realise a proposal for an artwork to include community engagement activities. Please note that to get the most out of this weekend course, students will need to carry out self-directed research in the evening between days 1 and 2. Access to the internet, either through a personal computer or through using third party equipment, would probably be necessary.
The aim is for students to take away knowledge and confidence in securing and delivering public art commissions. To understand the terminology and administration skills needed on these projects.
Important: Due to the limited time available, this will not a 'making' course and does not focus on the fabrication or physical creation of artworks. The skills we will help students to develop are primarily research, understanding the language of the industry, concept development and project management.
Cost: £295
