Shipley Late: The Monumental and the Mundane
28th June 2013, 6pm-9pm
Visit Shipley Art Gallery for an evening of talks and monumental making activities inspired by the work of artist James Rigler.
HEAR! James Rigler
James Rigler's work responds to architecture and built environment around us. His large scale sculpture, Precinct, on display in the gallery as part of Jerwood Makers Open, challenges the ideas of the public monument using materials which are domestic and mundane. Fascinated by the legacy of modernism and what distinguishes something ordinary from something extraordinary, James will discuss how his work seeks to reveal the contradictions of public monuments.
James Rigler has recently been appointed V&A's ceramic artist in residence.
HEAR! Anna Pepperall
Anna Pepperall, Public Art Curator for Gateshead Council, will discuss the commissioning of public artworks within the planning and environmental developments of Gateshead, and their relevance to the sites where they are located.
MAKE!
Join artist Sharon Wilson to create a monumental scale sculpture celebrating your own ideas of what a monument can be.
This event is free but booking is essential.
