Jon Egging Public Art Commission
Commission Opportunity for a Professional Artist
On the 20th August 2011 Red Arrows pilot Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging was tragically killed when his aircraft crashed in the north of the borough following an aerobatic display over the seafront at the Bournemouth Air Festival.
The Council responded positively to strong public opinion following the death of Flt Lt Jon Egging, and gave a public commitment to provide a memorial in the town, of a format and at a location of Flt Lt Egging’s family’s choosing.
Bournemouth Borough Council is working closely with the pilot’s family to commission a Memorial that should be in place in time for the 2012 Bournemouth Air Festival. It is intended that the Memorial will be located (subject to planning approval) on the cliff top, close to the East Cliff Lift within a small area of rockery and opposite an existing memorial plaque dedicated to a RAF pilot killed in 1947 whilst performing a Battle of Britain memorial flight off the coast of Bournemouth.
Following the wishes of the Flt Lt Egging’s family, local primary school children within Bournemouth have been invited to submit ideas for the memorial. The Council seeks to appoint a professional artist to undertake detailed design and construction of the winning design concept, engaging and involving the winning school children throughout.
The deadline for expressions of interest from professional artists is Monday 16th January. Responses to frequently asked questions will be posted on this page so please keep checking for updates.
